INFO-661: Art Documentation; Pratt Institute
Project Description – Based on a fictitious international museum, the NET.tropolitan Museum of Art, my team created this Request for Proposal (RFP), in order to systematize the organization, preservation, and accessibility of their net art collection. The plan includes a unified numbering and cataloging system, a metadata application profile (MAP) tailored to born-digital creative materials, a workflow concept map, and staffing considerations. These parts work together to create a cohesive plan to handle this complicated, but trending, medium in our collections practices.
Methods – After creating a basic background for our institution, we did an audit of current practices, standards and workflows around the handling of net art. This allowed us to have a more comprehensive idea of the way net art functions and the preservation and metadata needs that comes with that. Once we got this basis, we worked together to create a workflow concept map, defining the responsibilities and purview of each department and digital tool in this framework. Having this established, we then created a MAP utilizing standards and formats that balanced compatibility with net art as well as standardization of metadata on a larger scale for accessibility and sharing. Each member then cataloged an example artwork in order to show this in practice. After establishing the entire process, we compiled all of the work and included supplemental information on staffing considerations.
*This was a collaborative group project. Our guiding goal was to create an interoperable documentation framework to ensure long term accessibility and integrity of the digital collection, in support of global, community-based expression. My role was metadata focused and I worked on several tasks including the metadata application profile and vocabulary development. Together we created an overarching concept map, cataloged sample records, and created a concise and cohesive proposal deliverable.*
